Course Description: “Culturally relevant teaching is a pedagogy that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural referents to impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes.” ~Ladson-Billings
Culturally relevant pedagogy, although originally discovered when studying successful teachers of African-American students, has proven to be effective in working with culturally diverse students from various backgrounds. In this course, you will learn about culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP), including its definition and origins. You will be presented with data and research on the effectiveness of implementing CRP with culturally diverse students. In addition, you will learn of examples of implementation of CRP in math, science, social studies, english, and physical education classrooms. Culturally relevant pedagogy is more than just implementing lessons, the characteristics of the teacher are also important. Therefore, you will also explore the profile of a culturally relevant teacher, and will receive recommendations for implementation of CRP in your classroom.
